Our main focus has always been India, as the owners of Tree of Life have a deep personal connection to the region spanning back to 1968. For the last 20 years, Tree of Life’s main suppliers have been two Indian-owned family businesses, one based in Delhi, the other Jaipur. Women who are passionate about fashion and the Indian aesthetic, and who take pride in their workers and workplace head each of these businesses.
Our relationship with the people who make our goods is far from being disconnected and anonymous. We know their faces and value their contribution. Apart from running a workplace that complies with international standards, our suppliers assist their employees with children’s education costs, medical care, and marriage costs.
Extended lead times for our collections (usually in development for 6 months) means that the pressures of “fast fashion” are avoided. Instead, we are long-term champions of traditional handcrafts such as hand-block printing. Such processes are the antithesis of mass-production, using methods that take time, are in keeping with the seasons, and are inherently beautiful through the quirks of imperfection.
Tree of Life has always refused to do business with any manufacturer that exploits child labour. We further commit to remediate the situation for any child found to be in employment by our suppliers by providing for the child’s education and replacing the lost income to the family.
We do not publish the names and addresses of the factories and businesses that we deal with because our suppliers are small-scale bespoke companies that we have worked alongside over many years to develop our unique products. For this reason, this information remains the intellectual property of Tree of Life and is not available publicly. However, we provide these details to relevant NGO’s upon request.
Our commitment to social and environmental responsibility is a work in progress. We are currently looking deeper into our supply chain to implement more sustainable and ethical initiatives such as the use of Better Cotton Industry (BCI) certified cotton.
Our products are sourced from India, Indonesia, Thailand, China & Nepal.
